The power of Pies
Written by Payten Logue
On my 8th birthday, I received the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten. A peach pie with filling bubbling out of the top. It was placed into a gallon size Ziploc bag with my name written in sharpie across the front. You might think, “a pie… really?” But it wasn’t the content of the present, but the meaning behind it that meant so much to me. That pie was baked with love from my great-grandma Logue and delivered to me just like every other one of her grandkids, sisters, nieces, or sons received on their birthday.
Having been born into the Logue family there was no doubt that I would carry on the role of being a fourth generation 4-H member. It was through my great-grandma and 4-H where it was instilled in my heart to serve others. Some of my favorite childhood memories include my dad and I going to my great grandparents early on Saturday mornings. My dad would always be outside repairing something ancient, while I would run inside to bake with my great-grandma Ruth. The lessons I learned during these short hours went way beyond baking. It was her infectious laugh, storytelling and servant’s heart where I learned the most.
My great-grandma had the true definition of a servant’s heart, and it was through the power of little pies that fueled my passion for giving back. She tied serving and the agricultural industry perfectly and her legacy lives on within our community. I hope to carry on the heart of my great-grandma within me and serve others wholeheartedly. My two passions are agriculture and service, and I strive to build my personal and professional goals around what I can do for other people.
Having a heart for service is one of the reasons I fell in love with Sigma Alpha and the Purdue College of Agriculture. There are so many opportunities to serve an organization or people that inspire you. Albert Einstein once said, “Only a life lived for others, was a life worthwhile.” While my great-grandma passed away when I was thirteen, I think the most valuable life lessons came from her, and it has shaped me into the person I am today. I truly can’t think of a better place to serve than within the agriculture industry!
